Just a small update to show you what we've been working on lately.
Apparently my mom loves to build skirts or something because a few days ago when I got home she was already cutting out pieces and everything way before I got home.
So most of the skirt was built by her. lol

And also, Good news! Todd a fellow builder and friend, volunteered to help me paint Goldie! He's a professional painter and told me over the phone he could paint it in layers and can get it to have all the different colors and highlights in the dome and body.
So when I get Goldie close to being finished enough to paint him, I'll have to spend about a week down in Orlando with them to have him painted.

Oh, and about the Trigun revolver, I have been working on it(not this week though) and I still have a ways to go before even get it ready for priming what with all the pits and the fact that the mold is kind of lousy.
Will post pics when I do get it primed.

Paint color choices.. part 2

Okay so we're back to trying to find a gold for Goldie.
Here are some of the different yellowish gold colors I found:

I don't really care for any of those golds very much, so what do you guys think?
Too much yellow for me.

While looking through pictures of Goldie on other websites I found this:

To me that tan-ish gold color looks pretty close to what the gold looks like in the picture below.
So I might be going with this color on the cubee Goldie in the picture to the left.

In the cartoon you can see that Goldie has many different shades of gold in his dome and on his body. There's yellow, gold, tan, and even a little bit of green.
So really, there isn't really one single color for Goldie at all. Which is why I am going with whatever color I think looks best on him.

So do you guys think the cubee Goldie in the picture looks closer to the Goldie the picture above or are one of the other colors better?

New projects!

While I'm waiting for more parts to come in for my droid, I'm going to be working on this Trigun revolver prop:
I'll make an update when I'm finished with it.

Also while I was at Megacon this year, I finally decided what costume I want to make next year.

So when ever I get the chance I will be joining the Rebel Legion website and seeing which rebel pilot I want to make.
Right now their website seems to be down or something because I can't get to it.
(I will make an update of which one I choose when ever I can get to their site.)

Megacon 2011

Megacon is finally over and I am exhausted!
I had lots of fun this year and the booth looked better than last year with the combined efforts of The Southern R2 Builders group and The Rebel Legion.

READY FOR MEGACON 2011!

Well, after getting on the wheels and castors and adding some strength to the center leg and ankle, he is now ready for Megacon 11'!
While he isn't driveable yet, he can still be rolled into the convention center instead of having to carry his butt.
And also, he rolls very well! You can push him with your pinky finger and he takes off! Try doing that with a heavy aluminum droid. ;)
So if Celebration 6 is in Orlando again I might enter him into the droid races. I can see him easily as one of the fastest droids there because of how light he is!
Anyway,

As you can see my cat Wally's legs are sticking out of my droid. Yep, my droid is going to be cat powered. He will be the fastest droid ever.

For anyone who may be wondering how the center leg and A&A foot looks up close.

Goldie on 3 legs (temporarily)

Another small update to show you Goldie temporarily on 3 legs. As you can see he is not on wheels yet because I just ordered the scooter wheels and belts yesterday ($83 fraking dollars!) and still have to buy the wheels for the center foot from Home Depot. And more screws to buy which I should be buying those at the end of the week.
We had to sit the body flat on a table when we were setting the legs and got the legs at 34 degrees instead of 36 to give room for the motor holders.

Well, as soon as the wheels get here I can finish getting him on wheels and rolling for Megacon.

Goldie with 2 legs

Long time no see! Been a while since I last posted any thing, I kinda got out of building for a while. But now I'm finally back into building again and plan getting him done late this year or the next depending how money is.

As you can see he is now standing! On 2 legs though. I plan on working on getting him on 3 wheels before Megacon in March if parts get here on time and if I have enough money. lol That'll be easier on my back, I won't have to carry him, I'll be able to just roll him in this time.
Since I had gotten out of building for like 6 months or so my dad has been working on the other leg (the white one in the pic) so that was mostly done by him this time. Boo on me. haha

We're now working on the foot motor holders and getting the seemingly hundreds of screws, nuts and washer put in it so it won't fall apart. It costed me $33 alone for the screws and stuff yesterday and I still have more to buy.
So once that's done we can work on the third leg and go ahead and order the wheels and belts for the feet.
He should be on wheels then.

Celebration 5 pics

Woo! Celebration 5 is officially over, and I am exausted!
Now that it is finally over, it's time for the pictures of some of the things that went on during the con.

Here is my droid at C5. Some of the info on the stand up thing is wrong: the cost is actually over $500, the age should be 18, and the weight is wrong as well.
But we did turn in the info quite a while ago so, of course the info different now.
Surprisingly enough Goldie did get more attention than I thought an unfinished droid could get. A little girl said, "I don't like that one, he's mean!" because in the show he's evil and tries to get Anakin, Ahsoka, and R2 killed. I loled at that.

I got to meet DroidWelder and his Clone Wars R2 in person for the first time, which was pretty neat since he's been the one who was helping me with my Clone Wars Goldie over the internet. :)

I also got to meet Thomas and his wife in person for the first time as well! (Nice meeting you, Thomas)
Hope my parents didn't talk you to death too much. hehe

Todd and Jessica's droid was looking very nice. Can't wait to see Jessica's R7 finished oneday!
Mom's and Jessica's droid was stealing all the attention from poor R2. :( lol

I also liked Todd's dome he made, it's an R9 I think. First one ever made!

Got to meet Dave Everette for the first time. He loved mom's droid, so she let him take it for a spin for a while.

I met many others in person for the first time, and seen some familiar faces as well. Very fun experience! Nice to meet all of you!

Our group, the Southern R2 Builders group bought one of the Hoth scenes they had at C5 for a little over a thousand dollars from the Atlanta group.
Well made set up and will be a hit a Megacon next year. ;)

My parents met some guys from "The Grand Florida Alliance" at the con on the last day and they donated a Hoth ice set up to us for free! They're website is SWGFA.com
They are a large collective of devotees to the "Galaxy Far, Far, Away". Whether you're a collector, costumer, gamer, or just love the movies, they have something for everyone. They also have local events.
Very generous of them! Thanks again guys! This we be at Megacon next year as well.

The droid race and the extreme droid challenge was fun, even though I lost.
My remote control kept getting interference and cost me the race, I was pissed. But it was fun anyway. I'll have Goldie running for sure this time and will have alot more experience under my belt!

The droid parade was probably one of my favorite events out of the whole con.
It felt like we we're all celebrities going down the red carpet.

Though I enjoyed C5, I still like Megacon better I hate to say it.

Leaving togo to Orlando tomorrow!

Hello everyone! Tomorrow we're heading out to go to Orlando for Celebration 5!
Sure, I didn't get Goldie fully built and standing like I said I would, but I'm still excited to go to C5. :)
This is probably going to be one of the biggest cons I've ever been to. I myself have never been to any of the Celebrations before, so I'm not sure what to expect.
Well, can't wait to meet those of you I've never met in person, god I suck at meeting new people, and will probably seem uptight. I hate being shy. lol

Anyway, enough of this mindless babble!
Here is what we managed to get done before C5:

We got one of the legs completed and primed (you can't see it in this pic), the other leg half built, both shoulders built, body wet sanded and primed and wet sanded again, and the dataport is temporarily glued in, and we have all of the parts for the dome temporarily put in for show.

Attaching the legs to the body

Hello again everyone, it's time for another update on my favorite droid!
With Celebration 5 nearly just a round the corner, we're gonna have to crunch big time this week!
Today we we're working on getting the legs attached to the body... well one leg, we're still working on finishing the other one.
We had to make the shoulders abit smaller than the regular droid's shoulder because if you look at a screenshot of Goldie from Clonewars, you'll notice his legs fit alot closer to the body than the legs of a classic droid.
Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about:

You can see that the legs almost touch the body!

Now onto how we did the shoulder.
Here is what we used to make the shoulder:
We used 1 piece each of 2 different kinds of wood. We used 3/4 pressboard and 1/2 MDF.
And the measurements are 6 7/16 inches in diameter.
We used a router to cut the 2 circles out, used wood glue to attached the 2 pieces together and sanded down the edges to get it nice and smooth.
We will eventually, when we get to it, will skin the shoulder with polystyrene and paint it.

In this picture we have the leg and shoulder temporarily attached to the body.
Not only that, you can see we've been working on getting the dome and body ready for painting. ;)
And also the vent in this pic is screwed up. It turns out that the glue we used on the vents doesn't stick to resin very well. So that will be something else we'll be working on this week.

The parts on the dome are temporarily taped on for show.

Leg is skinned!

Well, here it is! The fully styrene CloneWars leg is now completed.
I here by dub these the Calvin CW Styrene Legs! lol Or maybe we could call them the C&C (Calvin&Crissy) styrene legs.
All it needs now is some putty work here and there, the little details that go on it, and some paint.
If anyone wants to know the measurements or has any question about building the legs, just ask. We need more CloneWars droids!

We're on to building the next one! This time I get to do most of it now that we know how to build the legs. I get to start cutting them out tomorrow. :)

Lots o' leg progress

Goldie's leg that everyone here's been working on for the past few months is finally getting close to being done! (except for all the little details that go on it, and the paint :P)
My dad and me got all of the layers permanently glued on last week with some Weld-on glue for styrene.
It will be much faster to build the next leg now that we figured out how to build the first completely styrene leg, so Goldie should be on legs for Ancient City Con here in Jacksonville, FL. YESSSS!!
I've also ordered the foot motor holders for the feet last week, costed me about $140for a pair but it will be worth it to finally see him standing.
So as soon as that comes in, I will be building the feet.
Gonna spend the last remaining bit of cash I have left to buy the foot motors and the wheels and anything else I can afford this weekend. woo 3 cheers for being poor again!

Right now, we are getting the legs skinned, so if everything goes as planned the leg should be finished today.

Below is the progress pics of the styrene leg:

We went ahead and got the wires for the motors and such in the leg before we closed it up.

Built the little pocket there out of polystyrene and pvc pipe.

We used a dremel and a sander to get rid of the excess skin that you see in the above picture.

Paint color choices...

Here are all the different gold spray paints I've tried so far for the dome.

Alot of the colors came out much different than what it showed on the can, which really sucks because that means I'm out $5-7 dollars each time I pick a wrong color.

Some are also 2 different spray paints mixed together to try and come up with a another color.

And here are some of the more yellow-gold colors we got from Sherwin Williams.

This is probably going to be the color I'm going with. The color is called "duckling". The color looks alot better in person.

I'll just need to find out if I can get it in a spray can. And it may not look the same as the sample, so I'm crossing my fingers that it will come out right.

I've noticed that "Goldie" is not really gold, he's more of a yellowish-gold to me. And all the gold spray paints I've sampled came out a little too shiny, and some had a glitterish look to it.

Which is why I'm going with a more yellow color instead of a gold.
The color I've chosen isn't perfect, but it's good enough for me.

I should be painting as soon as I finish up with the ring, fill all the pits in the dome, and when the holos come in.

We got the rader eye finished today and went ahead and glued it in with some Goop.
Well, it's not entirely finished, we taped on lense for now. The lense I went with are the bronze see-through kind so I can eventually put a web cam in that area.

And in the picture above is my new $40 "dome bumps".
They're supposed to light up red when I get them hooked up. They're the black and red version of dad's (Calvin) blue and chrome dome bumps. Same price and from the same place he got them too.

And also we've been trying different types of gold spray paint for the dome and STILL haven't found the right color! I've found a color that would probably look good enough, so I might have to just settle with it.
Sooooo, you might just be seeing Goldie painted pretty soon!

Working on the dome again

I'm working on Goldie's ole noggen again, trying to get him ready for StarWars Celebration 5. Only less than 5 months to go, ick!
Today we got the guide lines drawn out for the radar eye and the stripes. Ignore the dirtyness of the dome. :)

Here is the front piece of the radar eye cut out from the extra outer styrene dome I bought.

And we also got the hole for the PSI cut out, and:

the back PSI and logic cut out too. Still rough looking, so I'll be doing some more cleaning up on that.

Small update

Just a small update of some of the things we've done in the last few days...
We used a dremel to cut out the holes for the vents, *very nerveracking*, and
I added 2 pieces to the frame for support (the 2 vertical pieces closest to each side of the vent area), and made 2 notches in the vertical pieces for the data port to fit.

We altered the frame again for the vent to fit in as you can see.

And after much sanding we got the vents to fit in!

And we mananged to get a few things done on Goldie. ;)
As you can see in the first picture, we finally got the holes cut out for the logics which took the combination of a dremel and hack saw and LOTS of sanding with a metal file my dad likes to call Mr. Bastard. lol
Also you can see in the pictures the thin ring around the dome is taped on temporarly until I can get it glued on.
My dad and me also got the dome permanantly glued onto the dome ring and got it and the bearing mounted onto the body. So now his head can move... just not by itself of course.

In this picture below, I got the back panels cut out, sanded, and glued on.

Annnd in this picture I got more body work done to make the area we patched up un-noticeable. Still got alittle more to do on it though.

Last but not least, our resin parts came in!
This is the before and after picture of the vent surrounds. We had to shorten the vents some because the Clone Wars droids have smaller vents.
The first one is the one we shortened and the second one is the one we didn't cut yet.

Leg progress & more!

The measurements for the legs are in the pic below.

I also got all of the panels permanently glued onto the dome. I used 3m scotch tape and ISP Weld-on #3 to glue the edges of the panels, like we did for the panels on R3's body.
The rectangle drawn on the dome is where I will be cutting a hole through the outer dome for the logics.

Fixing boo boos

Well, it seems we've run into a few screw ups from when I was cutting out the skins.
The first one is this:

When I was cutting the skins I did not know that I wasn't supposed to cut those square holes out you see in the picture above. *facepalm* (clone wars droids do not have these side vents)
Also, I almost forgot about the back vent so we had to cut out the hole for the vent and adjust the frame the hard way.

Here is a picture of the hole fixed.
Still got some bodywork to do on it, but once it's done and painted you won't even notice it. ;)

And... WTF I don't even know how this happened.

Where the dataport is, I seem to have cut the inner skin wrong. So I will have to trim it down to be the same size as the outer.

Moral of the story: Study, study, study the reference pictures before you decide to do anything! And pay attention to what you're cutting when cutting out skins.

Building R3's legs

Starting to look like an R3!

Mom and Dad before I even woke up this morning, decided to work on Goldie for me. :)
They used 3m scotch tape to permanently stick the outer to the inner skins.

Here is a picture of some of the panels and the arms taped to the skin.

Still got some sanding and other panels that need glue around the edges, but it's finally starting to look like an R3.
We used ISP Weld-on #3 glue for the edges of the panels.

Got some work done on the pocket vents also.

The glue came in finally for our droids! But, a day later after we glued the inner skin to the frame...
This happens

The glue melted the plastic and created those flat spots and creases you see on the skin.
So we're probably going to end up tapeing the outter skins on like Brenda did with her R3-T7. http://r3t7.blogspot.com/2007/09/outer-skins-mounted.html
Hopefully all those bad spots won't show.

Skin and frame work

Dad and me got some more work done on R3 today. :) This is starting to turn into a father and daughter project.

The picture above shows the drawing we're using to show us where the panels and everything goes. You can also see some of the guide lines dad drew on the skins.
I got quite few panels drawed and cut out of some .40 styrene today too including the arms.
Below shows how we figured out how to get the vent to fit in a Dave E. frame.

As you can see the standard Dave E. frame is not designed for the CW droid. Here we will have to modify the frame for the pocketvent.

2 pieces need to be removed from the frame for the pocket vent to fit.

We used a dremel to trim the frame verticals back 1-1/4 inch to make room for pocket vent. And trimmed the frame ring back 3/4 inch to make more room for the vent to fit properly.

Cut a new vertical piece and glue here for added support. This leaves room for pocket vent.

We should be finishing up the vent tommorrow.

We taped the skins on to the frame to see if they fit, and they fit great!
The drawings on the skins are going to be changed since I'm doing the Clone Wars version.

Man, this year has gone by quick! Only a few more months till Megacon, yeesh!
Dad and Mom got some more pieces glued together as you can see in the pics.
The frame was done mainly by them because I have little to no skill at this kind of thing. lol But I did do all the sanding and some of the cutting at least.

Also here is a picture of our 20 pound turkey. Yum!

Working on R3's frame

I finally got the time to work on my robot again! :)
My dad and me spent most of the weekend cutting out pieces of polystrene for the frame and sanding them.
Yesterday and today we glued some of the pieces together.

This isn't related to building Goldie just thought I'd share it anyway.
Today was the big Florida Vs Georgia college football game and Dad decided to bring him out in the crowd.
Man, people were flipping out over him!

Also the last pic is my kitten I found under my house 4 weeks ago. One of my outside cats bred with a siamese cat apparently and she only had 2 kittens.
One is female and the kitten I have is a boy. I named him Wally. :)

And I should be working on my robot this week too! (I hope)

More dome progress

We spent about 20-30 min. or so sanding the bottom of the dome to get the rough jaggedness off of it.
Then I cut out the ring that goes around the bottom of the dome.
We only need one ring instead of two since that's how R3 is in the CloneWars movie.
You can see the ring we'll be using better in pic. 1.

Some progress

Well, haven't been able to do much lately but, I did get a few things done this week.
I got the top round panel up on the top of the dome cut out today.
We at first had the smaller panel you saw in the last post on the dome until we noticed that the panel was actually bigger in the CloneWars movie, almost touching the other panels.
So we cut that piece out of the inner dome, which works for me because it made the inner fit ALOT better inside the outer dome.
The hole in the top circular panel will eventually be filled will glazing putty and will then be sanded.

And I also finished cutting the skins out, and got the extra styrene cut off of the ring the dome sits on.
Annnd finally the material for the frame came in this week!

Dad and I finally got most of the panels cut out today with a dremel and sanded them down.
I just placed them anywhere to see what they would look like on the dome.
Dad did a good job on those, it's looks great and I haven't even painted it yet!

The last picture is what the dremel did to the extra C&D styrene dome we bought for the panels.

Panel guide lines

The "spider" Pixelfiend sent came in real quick! (Thank you! :))
I now have the panels drawn on it. It's off alittle by maybe a hair but, it doesn't need to be THAT perfect. And I don't think anyone'll notice either.
It may be off because some of the waves that were in the dome when I got it are still in there. Couldn't sand it all out. :(

And it turns out I had just enough Easy-Tack to get the "spider" print to stay on.
First, I had to spray the easy-tack on there to keep it from comming off of the extra styrene I had.
Then, I had to cut it out.
And after that, sand off the incorrect lines I had on the dome.
Then finally, put the spider on top, tape it down, and draw the lines on.

And I thought I wasn't going to get anything done today. HA!

R3 update

I'm pretty much gonna follow what DroidWelder did to make the eye, panels, and the arms. http://astromech.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1453&page=5
The frame material also came in today buuut, it was the wrong size! So we sent it back and now it will probably be a while till it gets here.

I got the plastic base plate for the frame cut too. (second pic)
The base is 3mm thick and about 18 inch across.

Annnnd, the can of Easy-Tack I use to keep the skins from comming off ran out, so I may not be doing much at all this week.

Finished the cutting the inner skins, now I got work on the outers tommorrow.

Would of finished all of them but, I have to wait for everyone else to be done with theirs first. So I guess I have to do one a day. It ain't no rush for me since the frame material may not be here this week.

Cutting The Skins

The polystyrene skins finally came in yesterday, and I also got the blueprints printed out at Fedex Office today.
The size of the skins are .40
So I began working on it and only got the the front inner skin cut. (would of done more but I was out all day)
I used Easy-Tack (refer to pic 2) to keep the template from comming off while I cut it.
The only part I didn't cut was the round part, I got my dad to cut that part out. Mainly because this is the first time I've ever done this.
The template is going to end up staying on there till I figure out the arms and panels because the Clones Wars droid design is a bit different from the others.

I'll be working on it tommorrow! ;)

Still waiting for the material for the frame to come in. It should be here any day now.

And for the people watching my blog and are new to this like me, TAKE YOUR TIME! Cut very slowly or else, you'll end up moving it or straying away from the line.

Dome ring

We had a floral masonite ring that just happened to fit right inside the dome.
The ring added a lot of stability to the dome. Before it was pretty flexible.
Once the dome is completed we'll bond the ring in there permanantly.

And my dad cut off the excess part of the dome you see in the 1st picture. Oh and I helped hold it for him while he was cutting it of course.

I should be getting my polystyrene for the skins soon! Can't wait!

Sand, sand, sand...

I spent about an hour or 2 wet sanding the styrene dome with 320 sand paper.
Since there was some waves in the dome, it took a little bit longer.
At the bottom is a picture of the dome all finished sanded.
Good thing about a polystyrene dome is that you don't have to sand as much as you would with an aluminum. :)

Yay! The polystyrene C&D dome I bought got here quicker than I expected!
I've already got some of the lines on there, will do more tommorrow. And I'll get some better pictures of it too.

WHO is R3-S6????

Goldie was an R3 series astromech droid that was stolen by agents of General Grievous.
It was taken to Milagro, reprogrammed and surreptitiously returned to the Republic to act as a spy.
After the loss of R2 during the Battle of Bothawui, R3 was assigned as a temporary replacement to Anakin Skywalker during the search for R2-D2.
Because he was a spy, R3 was very devious and deceitful.
He masked his true missions with fake innocence, relying on appeared incompetence to attempt to kill Anakin and Ahsoka on various occasions before revealing his true allegiances to them.
Later on, R3 met Skywalker and the clones in the landing bay. Anakin learned that Ahsoka had engaged Grievous alone, and quickly went to rescue her. However, R3 locked the Jedi and the clones in the hangar, and also activated three Vulture droids. B2 super battle droids appeared, and the Republic forces engaged in battle. Anakin sent Artoo to look for controls on the outer platform and open the hangar. After Artoo found the controls, R3 followed him and engaged the droid in a duel. Both shocked each other simultaneously, but Artoo managed to incapacitate his opponent. After Artoo opened the hangar door, R3 regained control and attacked Artoo again. However, this time, Artoo spurted oil at R3 and knocked him toward the edge of the platform. R3 deployed a cable and hung on to Artoo to prevent himself from falling, but Artoo lit the oil on fire with his boosters and cut through the cable with his saw. As R3 flew through the air, he was smashed to pieces by flying debris.:(

Shortly after, Artoo was rescued by Anakin in his fighter.

I finally decided which droid I'd like to make after 5 years or so of watching my dad build his. I'm building Goldie!

Yeeep, so now I'm making one.
So far I've already got the dome ordered and the skins. Both made out of polystyrene. So much more cheaper AND lighter than aluminum!
Can't wait to get started!

I'll be using this blog to track all of my future progress as well in case you haven't figure that already. :)
